Founded in 1892 by the pastor of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church to support sacred religious services and perform German, Latin, and English language concert music in public settings in and around the greater San Antonio, Texas area. Originally, sponsoring mixed, female and children choral groups, today the male chorus focuses largely on its core competency of four-part male choral music, both sacred and secular. Membership is open to adult male singers of all faiths and denominations. Concerts today include fund-raisers to support rehearsal/operating expenses and performance costs for the club; for fund-raising for other choral groups and special benefits, both German-language and beyond, and often for veteran military audiences and senior citizens. The Liederkranz has undertaken several publicity tours abroad, as well as around the State of Texas, and continues to represent the diversity found in San Antonio at public singing events. Historically, the Liederkranz performed for the Texas Centennial Celebration, for Pope John Paul, for President of Germany, and at many other large public celebrations which included choral music. The choir continues a 120 year tradition of annually singing for the Saint Joseph The Worker German-language Mass in San Antonio; for the Saint Louis Day Festival in Castroville, Texas, for special retreat services around San Antonio, for two regional and statewide German singing association festivals, and many other public and private special events, both religious and secular.
