Advocacy and Legal Resource Sharing
There is a torrent of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and policies that make our states less equitable and actively harm our communities. In 2022 and 2023, there were record numbers of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation introduced in state legislatures; more than 200 in 2022 and 500 as of June 2023. These states are home to many military service members, their families, and veterans. As we work to uphold the civil rights progress made on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community, we are working to:
-Share legal resources for discharge upgrades for LGBTQ+ service members
-Create advocacy toolkits and know your rights materials including, the Freedom to Serve guide
-Lead advocacy efforts to codify LGBTQ+ inclusionary policies in military and veteran spaces so that a future administration cannot eliminate military service opportunities for trans people
-Educate elected officials on anti-LGBTQ+ laws’ negative impact on national security, military recruitment, and retention efforts
Strong Communities Support
Modern Military's Strong Communities Meetings are a safe, virtual, moderated monthly meeting for adult LGBTQ+ service members, veterans, and their partners to find fellowship, community, resources, and support. Support groups occur on the third Monday of every month at 8 pm ET.
Rainbow Shield Training Program
The Rainbow Shield Program is an online initial certification with yearly, continuing education training. Agencies and corporations receive culturally specific and trauma-informed linguistic, administrative, and environmental resources and knowledge to effectively work with LGBTQ+ and HIV+ military and veteran communities.
The program goals are to:
Raise awareness about discrimination and injustice
Increase knowledge among the affected populations regarding their rights
Amplify efforts to remove barriers for all vulnerable populations
Training topics:
- LGBTQ+ Introduction to Identity and Forms of Discrimination
- Building Inclusion and Belonging In the Workplace for LGBTQ+ Military and Veteran Employees
- Putting Affirmative Care into Practice for Military Service Providers
MilPride Advocacy and Support
MilPride is dedicated to military families with LGBTQ youth to ensure that you and your family never feel alone, no matter where you are stationed. MilPride is a resource and support network helping modern military families navigate the unique challenges of military service. This is particularly important now as families are scrambling to access healthcare services and equal rights (for sports and bathroom access) for nonbinary and trans children in anti-LGBTQ+ states.
We lead safe, virtual, moderated monthly support meetings open to parents, family members, and members of the LGBTQ+ community who are part of the military community. Each meeting is led by current/former service members or military spouses who will guide you in receiving support, giving support, and finding resources to help you, your family, and your community.
Incident Reporting
Modern Military encourages anyone who has experienced LGBTQ+ or HIV discrimination as a service member, military spouse/family member, or veteran to complete an incident report. The incident reports enable us to track and address concerns that arise within the worldwide U.S. military community and better support LGBTQ+ or HIV+ military members, veterans, and their families.
Modern Military Magazine
The magazine is the voice of the LGBTQ military and veteran community. It provides a resource to uplift and amplify the stories of LGBTQ+ service members, veterans, and their family members to advance fairness and equality.
