CRAIGS DOORS INC

AMHERST, Massachusetts

Craig’s Doors is named in honor of Craig D. Lorraine (1966-2011), a beloved and cherished brother of four sisters, a Navy veteran who served in the Gulf War, and a talented street musician. Craig was well known in the communities of Northampton and Amherst, Massachusetts, and his untimely death in February of 2011 affected many in our community. On one cold night when he arrived at a shelter, at the end of a difficult day, Craig expressed his singular wish to a staff member: “Sometimes I just wish I had a door…a door I can close!” We established Craig’s Doors not just to honor Craig’s wish, but to assist those who struggle to attain the privacy and dignity of a home of their own. We operate a behavior-based shelter that offers guests warm and welcoming shelter from the elements, as well as shower and laundry facilities, hot nutritious meals, and access to social services and medical care.

Helping to eradicate homelessness in Hampshire County, and to provide shelter to those who need it until we achieve this goal. This year we have been able to establish two sites that are open 24 hours a day, so that we can help individuals who do not have a home to stay safe from the additional and life-threatening dangers of COVID. Access to the basic necessities of life -- something that those of us who are comfortably housed have taken for granted these last few months -- will help to bring greater stability to our guests, so that they will in turn be more able to begin the process of rebuilding their lives, with our help, and yours.
