Inner Voice was founded in 1984 by the late Rev. Robert Johnson who operated a soup kitchen in Chicago, and quickly realized that while food was essential to survival, a broader array of services was necessary to help people break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.
Now celebrating 37 years, Inner Voice provides a combination of affordable housing and support services designed to help individuals and families use housing as a platform for health and recovery following a period of homelessness. Participants live with challenges that would seem overwhelming or insurmountable to the average person, including mental illness, drug and alcohol addictions, domestic violence, HIV, physical and/or developmental disabilities, educational and work skills deficiencies, and histories of incarceration. They may have experienced long periods of homelessness or frequent failures in maintaining permanent housing. Designed to help participants succeed for the long-term, support services provided through Inner Voice and its partner network are critical to helping participants secure immediate and affordable housing, preventing eviction and a return to homelessness, and improving health and well-being.
Inner Voice's primary programs include: Eddie Beard Homeless Veterans’ transitional housing serving 15 homeless male veterans at any one time, Pioneer House Interim Housing serving 13 single adult males at any one time; Supportive Housing Program providing case management to approximately 200 households including over 200 children; Chronic Homeless Initiative through 26 apartments, targeting single individuals; Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program facilitating placement of homeless veterans into livable-wage employment; Helping Individuals Re-enter Employment, modeled after HVRP, facilitates placement of homeless or at-risk non-veterans into livable wage employment; Transition in Place offering 25 veteran households support services; VA Case Management provides case management to 140 Veterans who were previously homeless and are transitioning to permanent housing; Families in Transition addressing homelessness affecting families with children in the CPS system in at-risk communities and serving 15 households, totaling about 70 people; and the Representative Payee Program serving 70 households.
