Our chapter created this project to locate the unmarked graves of veterans buried in the Elko cemetery and provide them with a headstone. To date, we have placed 20 headstones on the graves of veterans who otherwise have gone unmarked and unrecognized for decades, one of which is a headstone for the grave of James Mulligan, who died at the age of 106, and was a veteran of the civil war. With the help of the Gasper Salazar VFW Post 2350, applications are submitted to the Veterans Administration, along with documented proof of service and authorization of a family member to proceed. Our members have spent hours of researching to obtain the necessary documentation to satisfied the Veterans Administration’s criteria, and upon approval of the application, the VA will provide and ship the headstone at no charge, and the City of Elko has graciously agreed to install the headstones at no charge. Donations cover the expenses to acquire the necessary documents and application process. All research by our members is voluntarily with no compensation for their time.
