HBA provides healing wilderness retreats at a remote lodge. This camp is named after a soldier killed serving his county in Iraq. The Sgt. Carlton A Clark Memorial Veterans Camp is nestled in the deep pine woods and lakes of the Adirondacks. We have just purchased our own land, 100 acres of wilderness with three ponds about 20 miles out of Saranac Lake . We are currently holding a capital campaign to raise money to build the lodge to house the soldiers. We hold healing retreats for PTSD and teach skills to assist reintegration into the community after the military. Built into the retreats are adventure-based activities, challenge by choice, wilderness experiences, and groups led by certified therapists and Veteran peers. We subscribe to the Peer to Peer model and most of our volunteers are Veterans themselves. These retreats are powerful, beneficial, and have been reported as life-changing events for the Veterans who attend. All of our services are free to the Veterans and their family members. We also provide crisis outreach, suicide prevention, free medical, mental health, and substance abuse treatment transportation, assistance with advocacy and benefits, case management, and services to address homelessness. We have also been awarded a grant through NY State to promote Veterans' courts in the Northern NY region.
