Help Our Military Heroes (HOMH) assists active duty service members and veterans from all branches of the U.S. Military, who have been wounded, injured or sickened while on active duty. We provide grants for brand new, fully adaptive, wheelchair accessible, ramp-entry minivans to those most in need due to multiple amputations, spinal cord injuries, nervous system injuries, traumatic brain injuries, ALS and other diseases, or other debilitating wounds, injuries and illnesses. With these vans, our mission is to restore the mobility, independence, and freedom our recipients enjoyed prior to their wounds, injuries, and illnesses. It is our goal to get them into a minivan, and hopefully behind the wheel and driving again, with zero out of pocket expense for them. Since our inception in 2009, we have provided grants totaling over $4,300,000 for 228 minivans.
HOMH works directly with the veterans and their families, the VA doctors and therapists, and a network of mobility dealerships throughout the nation; we strive to make the process as simple and effortless as possible so that they can focus on their recovery and therapy. The process typically takes 1-2 months from application to van presentation, though it can take as little as 2 weeks or as long as 6+ months. The adaptive equipment needs of the recipient are determined by their doctors and therapists, the VA approves funding for the adaptive equipment they deem necessary, and HOMH helps the recipient find the perfect van from a reputable local mobility dealer. Whenever possible, driving rehab specialists will also teach the recipients how to drive with adaptive hand controls. HOMH ensures that all necessary safety options and conveniences are included in the van (NAV, Blue Tooth, Rear Back Up Camera, side and rear collision detection, DVD players, etc.). HOMH pays the difference, typically $15-40,000, between the total vehicle invoice and the amount of funding provided by the VA, thus making the vans cost-free for the recipients.
All funds raised are used for grants for the purchase of adaptive, wheelchair accessible, ramp-entry minivans for our military recipients. ALL non -program expenses are covered by HOMH's founding and board members, meaning 100% of every donation we receive goes directly to our program
