The Pongo Fund

The Pongo Fund is Oregon’s Pet Food Bank. Because hungry people have hungry pets. We work tirelessly to save lives, reduce shelter populations, fight hunger and end euthanasia by providing emergency pet food assistance, veterinary care and more to people temporarily unable to keep their own pets fed.

It began with a homeless family living underneath the Hawthorne Bridge. It was Thanksgiving. They said the shelters had food for themselves but not for their older dogs so they all shared the same meals. It wasn’t healthy for any of them, but that’s just how it was. We said we could help, and the next day we returned with healthy dog food, treats, dog coats and beds.

And since that day seven years ago our award-winning and volunteer driven public charity has become a national model by providing tens of thousands of dogs, cats and horses with the food and veterinary care they cannot get anywhere else, 9,000,000 healthy meals for 90,000 animals, keeping them safe at home and out of the shelters. Along the way pioneering innovative programs including our Emergency Kibble Response Team, our Mobile Veterinary Hospital and our Pet Food Bank.

That’s why dozens of respected organizations depend on The Pongo Fund, including Oregon Food Bank, Oregon Humane Society, Meals on Wheels, Department of Human Services, Department of Veterans Affairs, Red Cross, Portland Police Bureau, Women’s Crisis Line and more.

Because sometimes a simple bowl of kibble can be the force that both keeps a family together and saves the lives of the animals they love.
