The Respite Program at the New London Homeless Hospitality Center provides a safe, supportive place for individuals experiencing homelessness who are also recovering from serious medical conditions such as pneumonia, broken bones, surgery, or other health crises. Unlike a hospital, which focuses on acute treatment, respite offers a transitional environment where guests can rest, heal, and regain strength while still receiving essential care and support. Staff coordinate with healthcare providers to ensure medical follow-up, medication management, and continuity of treatment, while also addressing broader needs such as nutrition, housing, and case management. The program reduces costly hospital readmissions, eases pressure on emergency departments, and most importantly, gives vulnerable individuals the dignity of a stable place to recover. By blending healthcare support with housing-focused services, the Respite Program helps bridge the gap between hospital discharge and long-term stability.

The Respite program recently lost its funding from the Visiting Nurses Association due to its budget cuts, and NLHHC seeks additional support to pay the support staff who manage the guests care all day.
