The Balance King is a conceptual avatar negotiating the aperture between apprehension and epiphany. Under The Balance King nomenclature, Jeremy Nix has been embarking on diverse collaborative ventures across a spectrum of industries since 2017. Some of these areas include educational programming, live sound curation, composition and sound design, event curation and design, community based initiatives, and multimedia installations. Some descriptions and example links are provided of endeavors in these fields below, although as you will see, some of them cross-pollinate boundaries of assumed convention.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING

As mentioned in my original application, our flagship educational program is The Celestial Kingdoms of Sound.

The Celestial Kingdoms of Sound is a pioneering STEAM program, offered as in-school and after-school enrichment programs, begun by Jeremy Nix( The Balance King), in partnership with Montessori Tides School in 2018. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Though the program, Jeremy teaches young learners the wonders of sound and music in the natural world, and ignites their passion and curiosity for exploring the world around them, through a science-and-technology-integrated music curriculum.

In today’s technology-saturated modern world, learning to use modern digital tools as a positive force for growth and change, is paramount to future success in many endeavors and career fields. Technology can too often be a distraction, but in this class, Jeremy shows students how the devices we find in many of our homes, can be implements of creativity and learning.

Jeremy accomplishes these goals, with a combination of hands-on activities that tangibly demonstrate concepts in physical sciences, and technology-driven musical exploration through an array of digital music software. These activities include learning how sound and musical properties can be used to understand the inner workings of the world around us, and how sounds from the world around us, can be used to make music! The former is commonly referred to as spectroscopy, and the latter, sampling. We also cover topics including synthesis, frequency, resonance, composition, harmonics, deejaying, rhythm, music history, and much more! The curriculum is flexible, and tailored to each student’s abilities and interest level, so all participants are engaged and enriched, regardless of their musical and scientific vocabulary.

While this program started at Montessori Tides, we believe its impact can spread further. In particular, we'd like to bring this program to the broader community, especially marginalized communities that often do not have access to this type of STEAM enrichment programming. It is critically important, that marginalized individuals have the opportunity to develop in demand skill sets in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. In order to accomplish this, we need to update and modernize our hardware and software infrastructure, to allow for fluid deployment of the curriculum across a range of locations and environments.

The above Spring Performance recap slideshow videos (Google Drive links), are a montage of short samples from compositions by students of the program. I put the mixes together, using short segments from each composition, in order to make sure every student in each program year was represented at least once. The music is accompanied by a slideshow of pictures from each respective year of the program. Some of the other years of the program, we did not have the Spring Performance (a school-wide Tides event), due to the pandemic or scheduling conflicts, so there is no recap slideshow for those years. Please note that due to media privacy restrictions, these slideshows are private links, so it may be shared internally but not forwarded or distributed publicly in any way.

We have also deployed a version of the programming targeted for young adults, called “Mechanics of Music”, at the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, FL, for their “MOSH After Dark” programming series. In addition to the workshop, we also Executive Produced three promotional vignettes to promote the event.

LIVE SOUND CURATION

The Balance King is accomplished in navigating the inner emotional currents that translate to joy. The Balance King explore various disciplines and mediums to uncover the symbiotic relationship between virtuosity and invention. Each mix is crafted to transcend nominal tropes of genre expectations, and keep your heart on the dance floor. We meticulously ensure that our sound waves have intergenerational appeal, devoid of salacious or profane content, while still fresh, modern, and futuristic in spirit. We’ve curated the octaves and held residencies at museums, festivals, zoos, art galleries, schools, tea/kava lounges, wine bars, private and corporate engagements, and more.

COMPOSITION AND SOUND DESIGN

The Balance King, frequently working as one half of the sonic architectural firm “Memory is a Game”, has produced numerous award-winning full scores with sound design, for a myriad of creative, business, and government projects, including the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, Florida Department of Health, St Simons Lighthouse, Tom Ford Extreme Collection, Carla Sonheim Presents, and more! The Balance King is also signed to a major sync licensing out of LA called Score A Score.

EVENT CURATION + DESIGN / COMMUNITY BASED INITIATIVES

The Balance King has been involved in numerous community uplift events, both as a provider of entertainment and curator. Previous endeavors have collaborated with Feeding Northeast Florida, among other partners, to celebrate and empower marginalized members of our community. Currently, The Balance King is helping curate and design a school resupply drive for January of 2024.

MULTIMEDIA INSTALLATIONS

The Balance King applies the spectrum of his scientific, creative, and curatorial expertise, in developing multi-sensory multimedia installations. These installations have been featured in festivals like Boston ArtWeek and the Seattle Design Festival, and our collaborations have included entities like West End House Boys and Girls Club, Jacksonville Cathedral District, St Simons Lighthouse in Georgia, and Hilltop Elementary School in Washington.
