COVID-19 deepened and revealed gaps in our education system. The virtual model put even more pressure and illuminated the inequities facing our most vulnerable students. Technology including devices and stable internet connections are not universally accessible. Compounding this challenge, immigrant families have to navigate an English-speaking technology. With a remote school system, there are limited opportunities for families to partner with the district.
There is chronic underinvestment in our public schools. This lack of investment coupled with the legacy of policies that lower expectations and resources for our students of color, create disparate outcomes of our education system. Our region’s public schools rank at the bottom of the nation in per pupil investment due largely to an unfair tax system that has benefited property owners who are largely white. We must demand higher expectations, additional support and equitable investment in our Black and Brown students.
