Since the inception of this idea, Wood4Good has grown into a non-profit with the generous support of local businesses, community members, and volunteers. This past winter, Wood4Good was able to deliver to 150 families last year with over 190 cords of wood delivered

Wood4Good and the Axelrod family believe strongly in the value of building community, giving back, and the joy that comes from working hard to help others. We hope you also see the value in the mission of this organization, and join us in creating a little more warmth in Vermont.
In a state where nearly 40% of households rely on wood as a primary heat source, our work addresses a critical and often overlooked need. The cost of cordwood has increased by at least 20% between 2023 and 2025, with kiln-dried cords now averaging $500. For many Vermonters, heating their homes has become financially unsustainable.
Although state programs offer fuel assistance to income-eligible households, far too many families are still left without the fuel that they need to stay safe and healthy.
Wood4Good bridges this gap—offering immediate, accessible help without red tape. Like a food bank, we respond directly to urgent needs, serving veterans, single parents, caregivers, individuals facing medical crises, and others experiencing unexpected hardship. We currently serve families and individuals in Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle,
Addison, Washington and Lamoille counties, and we hope to extend services to those in need throughout the state and region. Despite Vermonters’ heavy reliance on firewood, there are only six firewood banks in the state—and none operating at the scale or with the vision of Wood4Good. Our wood comes primarily from local partners such as DJ’s Tree Service (Colchester) and Barrett’s/SavATree (South Burlington). This year, we received our first-ever wood donation from the State of Vermont—30 cords—a milestone in building public-private collaboration.
