We at GSH believe every person should have an opportunity to fulfill their basic needs regardless of limitations, disadvantages, trauma, or lack of opportunity. When each person’s needs are met, we understand and recognize the enhancement of our community through equity, resilience, and economic opportunity.
People receiving less than the area median income – a standard comparative measure of earnings in a community – are more likely to need a housing intervention. Those who live at Good Samaritan Home are on a fixed income (typically SSI/SSD). The average annual income for our residents is $12,482. We understand the housing crisis and realize that it is almost impossible to afford the cost of living in Boise at this rate. We work to provide an option where veterans, seniors, and adults with different abilities, can survive and thrive.
The average monthly rent for residents at the Good Samaritan Home is $568, which includes housing and utilities, three meals a day, and support like social work, counseling, and substance misuse treatment.
Studies have found that providing these services to individuals on the lowest end of the socioeconomic scale drastically reduces the costs to taxpayers. Significant data shows these services also improve community health by reducing the burden on social systems like hospitals, emergency services, and judicial interventions. These solutions also show improvement in health outcomes, based on Social determinants of health (SDoH). Social determinants of health are the conditions under which people are born, grow, live, work, and age, and include factors such as socioeconomic status, education, employment, social support networks, and neighborhood characteristics.
At Good Samaritan Home, we currently rely on the generous support of foundations and community members to fund our operations, allowing us the flexibility to tailor our services to meet the unique needs of our residents. While we do not presently receive government funding, we remain open to exploring all options that align with our mission and values as we continue to grow and serve our community.
