Family Houston is one of Houston’s oldest social services organizations. Founded in 1904, the organization’s purpose was to serve as a flexible social services agency ready to quickly offer help to Houston families after the devastating Galveston hurricane of 1900 and a smallpox epidemic. Family Houston adapted to better serve the immediate needs of the community. Through our many programs and outreach services, Family Houston builds stronger individuals and families by teaching the skills necessary to face financial, health, relationship, and other critical challenges. Whether through counseling students in schools, financial coaching, or enrolling a veteran for benefits, we have established a reputation for quality, comprehensive services in both English and Spanish. Our counselors and coaches serve clients through our central location in Harris County and the surrounding counties, with offices in the Bay Area, Fort Bend, Richmond/Rosenberg, Waller, and The Woodlands.
Our Case Management program assists individuals and families who are struggling with not only ongoing poverty, but also the inability to meet basic needs from various circumstances such as illness, unemployment, family disintegration, or disability. Our case managers help these individuals or families connect with an array of community resources to meet their needs and develop a self-sufficiency plan for the long run. We understand the everyday challenges individuals and families go through; therefore, Family Houston’s case managers help navigate and raise awareness about the many benefits and resources that individuals and families qualify for by signing up their clients. Our case managers are certified to use the Health and Human Services benefits portal to review current benefits and enroll their clients in programs like SNAP, CHIP, and Medicaid. Through our Returning Home project, we provide emergency financial assistance and case management to veterans and their families to help as they reintegrate after service.
For decades, Family Houston has been a leading provider for mental health counseling for children, adults, and families. In our Counseling program, our counselors primarily serve low-income clients of all demographics at various locations and schools throughout the greater Houston area. Our agency accepts all major insurance plans, CHIP, as well as Medicaid. Family Houston’s counseling services are provided on a sliding-fee scale based on household income. However, we do not turn away any individual or family for their inability to pay.
Family Houston’s Financial Stability services include Financial Education and Coaching and Employment Services. In Financial Education classes and one-on-one Financial Coaching, we help individuals set financial goals, budget, save money, manage debt, and understand credit. Clients are also able to meet with an employment coach to discuss resume building and career exploration. All these services help individuals develop not only the knowledge and skills to move toward personal financial stability, but also provide the resources for long-term success.
