The mission of the Food Bank of the Albemarle (Food Bank) is to fight hunger and poverty in northeast, North Carolina. Our primary goal is nothing less than eliminating hunger in the 15 rural counties in northeast North Carolina. In pursuit of this goal, 97 percent of every donation goes directly to programs and food purchase. Since 1982, the Food Bank remains the critical link for seniors, working poor families with children, the homeless, and active-duty military, their families and veterans to meet basic needs. Through our more than 145 programs -- emergency shelters, food pantries, soup kitchens, mobile distribution pantries, Backpack sites, we touch the lives of North Carolinians by providing nutritious food, hope and dignity. We act as the central repository and distribution point for food. Funded by foundations, corporations, and individual donors, we distributed millions of pounds of food to individuals, families, and our network of non¬profit partners to alleviate hunger throughout northeast North Carolina.

The Albemarle Food Bank and Food Pantry, Inc. was established in 1982. After experiencing tremendous growth, the organization evolved into the region’s largest hunger-relief charity now known as Food Bank of the Albemarle (Food Bank.)

We currently provide services to 15 rural counties in northeast NC. As a member of the Feeding America network and the NC Association of Feeding America Food Banks, the Food Bank provides food assistance through a local network of 100 nonprofit partner agencies including food pantries; a soup kitchen; Backpack programs, child and adult care programs and 24 mobile food pantries which are deployed monthly to the most remote locations in the area. We are a regional clearinghouse for the collection and distribution of food and grocery items for our partner agencies and programs for their food program. Over the past 38 years, we have distributed in excess of 107 million pounds of food, providing the area’s hungry with approximately 89 million meals.

The Food Bank’s food programs currently provide nutritious food to 48,010 individuals on a monthly basis. Over the years, we have transitioned from a general, yet important, food bank to an elite Nutrition Bank. While providing food to our clients is critical, it is also a powerful, viable solution to the serious problems of obesity and nutrition-related diseases that disproportionally affect low-income residents.

The Food Bank operates the following programs to serve those in need of food and grocery assistance:

- Senior Food Program -- Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)
- Food Rescue Program
- Fresh Produce Initiative
- School Backpack Program
- After School Nutritious Snack Program
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP Outreach Program -- formerly known as Food Stamps)
- The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)
- Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief Program

The Food Bank has unmatched reach into these vulnerable communities and, through our feeding programs, we address the devastating access gap by providing fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and dairy - where and when people need them most. We measure success in terms of closing the so- called "grocery gap," by increasing dependable access to high-quality food for those in need.
