Justice shouldn’t depend on a person’s income. Yet for thousands of Marylanders, access to safe housing, health care, protection from abuse, and economic stability often hinges on having a lawyer, something many simply cannot afford. Maryland Legal Aid exists to close that justice gap.

Founded in 1911, Maryland Legal Aid is a statewide, private, nonprofit law firm that provides free civil legal services to low-income Marylanders. From 12 offices across Baltimore City and all 23 counties, our attorneys and advocates help clients resolve the legal issues that threaten their safety, stability, and independence.

We focus on civil - not criminal - legal matters, including housing and eviction, child custody, domestic violence, access to vital benefits like SNAP and Medicaid, consumer issues such as bankruptcy and debt collection, and criminal record expungement to remove barriers to employment and housing.

Our clients include children, survivors of abuse, seniors, veterans, migrant farmworkers, and residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities - people whose basic rights and futures often depend on timely, skilled legal help.

Maryland Legal Aid provides full representation in state and federal courts, brief advice and counsel, community education, and connections to other resources.
