The Veteran's Farm of NC, Inc. helps veterans, spouses, and families learn the skills needed to become farmers. Our training programs (three and six months) provide participants with the basic understanding of agriculture as a whole, soil science principles to become a successful farmer, and hands-on training in many agricultural production models such as vegetable production, livestock, poultry, hydroponics, mushroom cultivation, equipment training, and much more. Our equipment program offers a way for farmer veterans to ramp up their production capability by checking out equipment needed that may be costly to acquire. Lastly, our network of 1,000 farmer veterans in NC provides mentorship and peer-to-peer networking capability to help veterans collaborate and build a community.
All of our programming is built to give veterans and their families a post-military purpose in agriculture by serving their communities. Furthermore, we've built a suicide mitigation framework from our programming as a whole to introduce a new way to fight veteran suicides. By giving a veteran purpose, working toward financial and personal sustainability, and providing the missing piece that veterans lose when they exit the military (their unit camaraderie) by integrating new farmer veterans into a network of peers, we are seeing less suicides through our programming.
