Since 2006, New Teacher Center has provided research-based professional development and coaching to thousands of educators in the Chicago region. Over this time, NTC has supported Chicago communities to build and sustain Optimal Learning Environments, implement new curricula, and develop equity-grounded mindsets necessary for teaching and learning to flourish.
NTC’s programming in Chicago includes:
- Oak Park Collaboration for Early Childhood (CEC): With the Oak Park CEC, NTC has been working to provide professional learning that is building the capacity of early childhood program leaders to utilize coaching strategies with educators focused on supporting students’ social emotional regulatory needs. Many program leaders are former early childhood classroom teachers, and have not had opportunities to develop the skills they need to support and coach teachers in being more reflective, rather than reactive, practitioners.
- Chicago Public Schools (CPS): With CPS, NTC has worked to improve student outcomes and reduce high teacher turnover since 2006. We have expanded in myriad capacities over the last 17 years, including extending our support to develop instructional coaches in the Elevate Coaching Program serving Opportunity Schools. Currently, NTC is engaged with the district with:
- capacity-building support for the New Teacher Induction and Mentoring program (NTIM)
- coaching and professional learning for Career and Technical Education (CTE) program leadership and Cluster Managers
- working with the Office of Network Supports (ONS) to provide consultation, professional learning, and coaching services to a small set of Progressive Schools. As part of this work, NTC’s support extends to District Leaders, School Instructional Leadership Teams, Principals and Assistant Principals, Instructional Coaches or other Teacher Leaders, and Reading Interventionists.
