A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck 17 miles from the eastern city of Jalalabad, near the border with Pakistan. The earthquake struck a mountainous area in eastern Afghanistan where many people live in fragile homes made of mud bricks and wood.
Impact: The death toll has surpassed 1,400, with thousands more people injured.
