Black & White Projects

by INDEPENDENT ARTS & MEDIA

Originally called ASC Projects, Black & White Projects began in 2013 as the exhibition program of A Simple Collective: a collective of artists and arts professionals dedicated to supporting community, access, and independence in the arts while promoting the San Francisco Bay Area as a hub of unique and innovative art activity in the international art scene, founded in that same year by curator and project-based artist Rhiannon Evans MacFadyen.

Since our founding, we've presented 40 exhibitions, exhibited 50+ artists, hosted seven residencies, and many talks and events. Through the pandemic, we paused our public exhibitions and refocused on supporting our artist community through added technical and
emotional support, advocacy with organizations like the Human Rights Commission’s Racial
Equity in the Arts Working Group, and partnering with organizations to create programs to better sustain artists both during and after the pandemic. As we begin to reorient to a post-pandemic ecosystem, our goal is to reopen our exhibition space in 2024 and to build new programs to continue to build growth and sustainability for underserved members of the arts and culture field while working toward decolonisation.
