Our mission is to create pathways to health and housing for the most vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness in our community, with a special focus on veterans and people living in encampments. We help participants reach their housing goals by providing a continuum of service from comprehensive street outreach and shelter to permanent supportive housing. Among our core values are meeting people where they are while cultivating a strong peer community, inclusive of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and disability.

Operation Dignity was founded in Oakland in 1993 by Alex McElree, a formerly homeless Vietnam veteran who got back on his feet and wanted to make sure other veterans had a way to do the same.

In the past 30 years our mission has expanded, and although we still serve approximately 250 veterans a year, we also serve approximately 1,750 non-veterans.

Our work with veterans now spans 7 sites across Oakland, Alameda, Berkely and San Leandro.
