Pushing Big Retail to Commit to Clean Ships
by PACIFIC ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES CENTERDid you know that the global shipping industry annually emits over one billion tons of climate pollution—more than all U.S. coal plants combined?
That’s why we are highlighting the harm ocean shipping causes to the climate and our communities.
Our new Ship It Zero campaign has already convinced one of the worst-polluting industries to start reducing emissions and protect port communities.
Just last month, we successfully pushed retail giants to commit to zero-emission shipping: Amazon, IKEA, and other giant retailers made an historic, market-shaping, first-mover commitment to move their products off fossil-fueled ships by 2040.
This is the most ambitious commitment in global shipping yet, but it’s not enough.
Join us to push for faster, bolder action. We can’t solve the climate crisis without clean ships, and your donation of any amount makes a real difference in this fight.
Let me tell you why:
2040 is simply too late.
We can’t afford to wait 19 years for real climate action. Climate change is getting worse every year, so what about tomorrow? What about 2022? What about this decade?
Top-polluters Walmart and Target are dragging their feet.
Walmart is the single-largest maritime importer to the U.S., and Target is not far behind. In fact, Ship It Zero's groundbreaking new Shady Routes report finds that Target plays an outsized role in the West Coast port pollution and congestion crisis.
The technology to immediately slash emissions already exists.
No excuses. Period. Even the world’s leading ship builders agree, “a 2040 zero-carbon timeline doesn’t scare us.”
We think it's unacceptable that Walmart, Target, and other retailers continue business as usual, polluting our climate and our lungs with dirty fossil-fueled emissions.
If you agree, join our crew to pressure Big Retail to do better, and to act faster, to protect the climate and our health. With your support, we can see bigger wins in 2022.
Together, we can make sure real climate action happens this decade, not 2040. The time to turn commitments into meaningful action is now.
Welcome aboard!
