Serving thousands of community members annually, we empower and support individuals and families in Skagit County who are experiencing poverty or facing economic hardships. As an independent, community-based nonprofit organization, Community Action has been fully devoted to fostering and advocating for self-sufficiency among those experiencing poverty in Skagit County since 1979.
Today, Community Action fills a critical gap by addressing the multifaceted needs of low-income individuals and families. Our organization offers a wide range of services, including food assistance, housing support, employment training, education programs, and access to healthcare.
Our holistic approach recognizes that poverty is often the result of various interconnected factors, and our team works to address these root causes comprehensively. In addition, Community Action actively engages our community, including individuals and families affected by poverty, local businesses, volunteers, and partner organizations. This collaborative approach ensures that solutions are client- and community-driven and sustainable, fostering a sense of ownership among residents.
Examples of some of the services and programs we provide include:
•Energy & Utility Assistance: Providing assistance to help under-resourced community members pay their bills.
•Housing Resource Center and Family Development Center: Providing assistance to individuals and families experiencing or at imminent risk of experiencing homelessness.
•Adult Education and Employmenet: Offering supportive employment; job skills workshops; and employment case management, including resume building and interview skills.
•Resource Center: Providing access to basic needs items, such as personal hygiene, toiletries, and clothing.
•Senior & Disabled Services: Empowering seniors and adults with disabilities to live independently in their homes by offering assistance with housekeeping, shopping, meal preparation, yard work, transportation, and minor home repair.
•Skagit Food Distribution Center: Coordinating our region's primary source of food assistance by collecting, organizing, and distributing approximately 70-80% of the food available through 11 food banks and 4 meal programs in Skagit County and San Juan County.
•Veterans Services: Providing services tailored to veterans, including navigation of veterans benefits, case management, and other services.
