Turning Tables is the only organization in New Orleans – a city with a rich history surrounding hospitality and spirits – that offers what we do: a craft bar training program that incorporates technical training, culturally-relevant spirits education, industry access and exposure, job placements, and extensive community resources.
Our 12-week training program is distinctly comprehensive. Students gain the tools to pursue a wide range of career pathways in food and beverage, including brewing, distilling, management, entrepreneurship, marketing, and trade advocacy. Week to week they gain a core competency and knowledge of the beverage industry, complemented by hands-on training that reinforces their education. Our curriculum is created in collaboration with local and national beverage industry leaders, and it dives deep into the history of Black and Brown people in the industry, reflecting back a legacy in which we are integral. Students learn about the fundamentals of the 3-tier system of the beverage industry (Production, Distribution, Sales) and they gain a deep understanding of spirits, brands, and their histories – all necessary knowledge for upward mobility in the industry. The second phase of the program involves an externship placement specific to their area of interest, under the supervision of a veteran industry mentor.
This program provides immediate career development and access to opportunity, creating levers out of poverty in the short- and long-term. Beyond that, the education and guidance students receive support their successful growth from bartending into leadership and management roles. We offer the program free of cost.
