Building B.L.O.C.K.S. Workshop series

by BLACK HOMESCHOOLERS OF CENTRAL FLORIDA

How has 2020 challenged and changed the community?
The Covid Pandemic has disrupted the Public School system and the result is many families wanting to play a greater role in how and what their child(ren) are taught. However, educating their child is such a highly personal and serious commitment, that many new Parent Educators make at least one of the following errors:
They make decisions based onfears and/or preferences instead of their child’s needs.
They are too close to be objective and fail to identify problems in real time.
They lack adequate support and get overwhelmed quickly, causinghomeschooling to stall out.

What should the focus be on moving forward?
Black Homeschoolers of Central Florida, Inc. has witnessed the need that many homeschools have for sustainability. The ease of starting a homeschool does not always translate into the ease of running and/or maintaining a homeschool. By providing Parent Educators the information and guidance needed to ensure a rich, progressive learning experience, truly, no homeschooled child will be left behind.

How will this funding help us affect change?
The funds we receive will be used to continue to provide a BUILDING B.L.O.C.K.S six-week workshop series for new/struggling homeschool families. This workshop will be given by HomeSchool Builders and this approach to Homeschooling will address the five components of every Successful Homeschool:
Brainstorming –This step of the process considers the developmental and academic needs
of each child to answer the question “Why is homeschooling the best option for my child/ren?”
Learning – This step has the Parent Educator discover their educational philosophy and uncover their child’s natural mode of learning to make the program inclusive for both.
Organizing – Armed with what motivates both the Parent Educator and Child-Student, this step is about determining the best method and curriculum in which to deliver academic content.
Circling – Everyone needs back-up, and this step develops a plan to keep everyone engaged and supported from the child-student to the Parent Educator.
Keeping – This step helps prevent stall out by showing Parent Educators how and when to evaluate their program to replace what is not working and keep their homeschool relevant.
Showcase – The confidence-building process involved in showcasing their homeschool programs requires that Parent Educator revisit each step and assemble it in a cohesive way.

How will our objective be accomplished?
What: BUILDING B.L.O.C.K.S for Successful Homeschooling
Who: New & Struggling Homeschooling Families
When: Ongoing for families that need it
Where: Virtually via Zoom

What should we focus on as we move forward? Our focus is for the well being of
our youth, for they are our future. We will continue to focus on education and meeting the needs of the homeschooling family.

What will you bring to the table to affect change? We will continue our pledge to
support homeschooling families, especially as they navigate these unchartered
waters.

The funds we receive will be used to pay for the 6-week workshop "Building Your
Homeschool Brick by Brick" so that we can offer it for free or at a reduced rate to new
homeschooling families. Each family receives a Participation Kit. The Workshop series includes 90 mins of content delivery, in addition to, 60 mins of follow-up support and Q&A during the week (day/time to be determined by participants during first session). When the series is complete, their completed workbook will serve as a journal of discovery and clarity that they will be able to refer to for the life of their homeschools. The framed blueprint will serve as a visual summary of the family's values, uniqueness as well as their "why" for homeschooling. Program participants will also receive short-term coaching throughout the year if they need it.
