Alamo Arts Academy -
Through our multimedia, educational program, Alamo Arts Academy, we teach middle school and high school students, skills in Digital Film Production, Digital Photography, Audio Engineering and Graphic Design. Our curriculum is aligned to the CTE, Texas Education Agency, TEKS, and taught by both certified teachers and industry professionals. Our lessons are delivered though an online platform and then reinforced through monthly meet ups and check ins.
In the spring we offer students our "48 to Create" event, which gives students 48hrs to complete a three-minute short film. Student teams select a genre, one line of dialogue, and one prop they must incorporate into their film and graphic design. Student will then have an entire weekend to write, shoot, edit and deliver their project which will be screened at the end of the weekend, followed by an awards ceremony. The production of the short film will utilize their Digital Film Production and Audio Engineering skills. Students will also create a digital movie poster utilizing Graphic Design and take behind-the-scenes photos utilizing Digital Photography.
In the summer our students get to attend our "Come and Make It" bootcamp, which is a two week, multimedia bootcamp where students will spend their days learning and working with certified instructors, industry professionals and seasoned veterans in their fields of interest.
Day 1 is a welcome day where all students will attend a kickoff event, check in, network, get their schedules and swag bag. From there on out, the days are broken up into two days per subject: Film, Graphic Design, Audio Engineering and Digital Photography. The final day, all students will attend the award presentations, Q&A and wrap party.
This is more than just multimedia education. This is real world experience with professionals on the job. Students will see how the tools and equipment they have been learning about are used in the field and they will be part of an actual production for professional clients.
We are nearing the completion of our Alamo Arts Academy pilot year and once complete, we will have served 167 students, taught 88 lessons, with 15 instructors and industry professionals, providing 613 hours of learning, 3,674 projects completed and 256 practicum hours.
BexarFest -
BexarFest pairs high school media production teams from Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson counties with local nonprofit organizations to create outreach media for the nonprofit to use in its marketing campaigns. Once the nonprofit has approved the final products, the teams submit their productions to our panel of industry professionals where they are scored and recognized for achievements in various multimedia categories. Awards are presented to teams at our premiere event in the spring.
Each team in BexarFest works with a local nonprofit organization to create videos, still photos, graphics, original music, and banner art the nonprofit can then use in its outreach efforts.
The purpose of BexarFest is to give high school students experience in media production and an in-depth look at how nonprofit organizations operate. Working as a team, students practice communications, resource allocation, time management and other workplace skills. At the same time, nonprofits participating in BexarFest give students the opportunity to experience community service while receiving free tools to use in their outreach campaigns.
To date, BexarFest has hosted more than 1,000 high school students from 50 public and private schools in 21 school districts across seven counties. Those students have created 240 minutes of video for 76 nonprofits serving every segment of our communities. In addition to videos, students have created graphic designs, still photos and even original music for their nonprofit partners.
