During a cold winter morning in 1981, the problems of the homeless were brought into stark perspective for the members of First Presbyterian Church in downtown San Antonio.
A homeless man, frozen to death, was found on the church grounds. In response, volunteers started a ministry in the church gymnasium to shelter and care for the growing number of homeless individuals.
By 1983 this program, having gained financial assistance of several downtown churches, was incorporated by 11 downtown congregations into San Antonio Metropolitan Ministry, Inc. (SAMMinistries).
Today SAMMinistries has a staff of more than 80 and is supported by thousands of volunteers who help families and individuals throughout San Antonio on their path to self-sufficiency.
HOW WE HELP
HOMELESS PREVENTION SERVICES
SAMMinistries’ Homeless Prevention Services provides rental assistance, utility assistance and supportive services to individuals and families who are in imminent danger of eviction, or are currently homeless.
TRANSITIONAL LIVING AND LEARNING CENTER
SAMMinistries offers 65 families transitional housing through individual homes in San Antonio, as well as our Transitional Living and Learning Center (TLLC). The Transitional Housing program provides housing, support and resources to families who show a commitment to gaining self-sufficiency. The individual needs of all family members are supported for a two year period, promoting the viability of the family as a whole while they transition out of homelessness.
RAPID RE-HOUSING
The Rapid Re-Housing program reduces the amount of time a family experiences homelessness and rapidly re-houses families into permanent, affordable homes. Financial assistance is provided for up to 3 months along with 12 months of case management.
SUPPORT SERVICES
At SAMMinistries it is important that we serve our clients and the community holistically. To do this, we offer supportive services to all program participants to support them spiritually, mentally and physically.
PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING
Permanent Supportive Housing assists and empowers families to live as independently as possible. SAMMinistries has a permanent housing program that assists families with whom one member of the family has a disability. SAMMinistries also manages 100 set-aside housing vouchers to help families find permanent housing in the private rental market.
