Bethany Cemetery Association of Travis County Inc

The Bethany Cemetery Association is a nonprofit, community-based organization committed to safeguarding one of Austin’s oldest African American cemeteries. Founded to protect the burial grounds of formerly enslaved individuals, veterans, and generations of Black Austinites, the Association works to maintain the cemetery’s dignity through regular maintenance, conservation, research, and public education.

Our efforts include historical preservation, interpretive signage, genealogical research, and community events that honor those buried here while educating the public about the rich, often overlooked history of Black life in East Austin. By fostering partnerships with local government, schools, historians, and neighborhood groups, we aim to ensure that Bethany Cemetery remains a well-maintained, respected landmark that embodies the resilience, heritage, and contributions of Austin’s Black community.
