The Warrior Storyfield is a large collaborative sculpture project designed to: Draw veterans and civilians into conversation around a common goal Invite the unspoken, even the unspeakable experiences of war to find a voice Stimulate artistic expression and hone the craft of metal working Create a naturally growing community of veterans and civilians And, one day To install these sculptures in a large community park to become a gathering place where we all continue to question, share and listen to our stories of war. Why We Are Doing This We believe that combat veterans returning from war develop a unique and often unspoken understanding of our world. This understanding is rarely asked for and mostly ignored. We believe that civilians have a need to hear veterans stories of coming home to do a better job of bringing them home. We believe that a team of veterans and civilians collaborating on a large work of art will stimulate community dialogue and serve as a powerful conduit for the veteran’s voice. Today, July 16, 2023 we are nearing completion of the both sculptures. When these are complete, we will be donating this art to an organization dedicated to assisting veterans coming home from war. This receiving organization will have the resources and drive to install them, care for them and use them as a tool within their programs. Contact us for more information. The Warrior Storyfield is a team of combat veterans and civilians who have joined forces to create a large work of collaborative art.

Dare we say it out loud?
Combat veterans carry a unique wisdom about war that civilians need to hear. Civilians carry a responsibility for war that veterans need to feel.

What if Making Art Could Bring Us Together?
What if we just started sculpting a 16 foot tall Dragon and an 20 foot tall Phoenix to capture the story of what it really takes to come home from war.

And what if we just say, the Dragon embodies the mythical fire of the warrior. And the Phoenix embodies the mythical fire of transformation that every warrior will need to come home.

This is a huge leap into the unknown. We’ve been at it for over 4 years now. And yet, the process continues to be new, challenging and mysterious every day. We are on an adventure. We are teetering on the creative edge. And we are asking ourselves over and over again “ Are we sculpting these creatures or are they sculpting us?

So What Winds Our Clock?

We’re Creating A Place To Be
To create a collaborative sculpture on this scale requires constant conversation. Our conversation builds trust. Trust opens the door to unbridled imagination. Imagination spurs our creative expression. And all of that creates community. A community that invites the unspoken and even the unspeakable experiences of war to find a voice.
One veteran on our team put it this way: “Damn, It feels good to have a seat at the table”.

We’re Discovering A Reason To Be
We’re not messing around. Every one of us is engaged in learning the craft of metal working while stretching our imagination right off the charts. We’re slicing up rusty scrap steel plate and transforming it into the bones, muscles, and hearts of the Dragon and Phoenix. With heat and hammer in hand we are infusing every piece of steel in these sculptures with our untold story.

One veteran on our team put it this way: "I thought my story would be all about the Dragon but, no, it was the Phoenix that drew me in. Yeah, this is where I need to be."

We Believie That Healing Is An Inside Job
Nope, we’re not looking to heal or fix anyone. Nor do we want to measure our “effectiveness”. By design, we have no forms to fill out and no boxes to check.

Instead we are creating a Field of Expression where each of us on the team can explore or own imagination and creativity with affirming support. Yes, healing can happen within this community, but that healing comes from connection, commitment and personal expression guided by each of us in our own time and in our own way.

So, Where Will The Dragon and The Phoenix Live?
We don’t know yet. For now, the process of building these sculptures is what is important to our veteran/civilian team. But we have a big vision for them.

One day, we hope to place the Dragon and Phoenix in a large park to form a community gathering place called the Warrior Storyfield. In that park we hope to see thousands of veterans and civilians, coming together to listen to and share our stories of war.

We have a long way to go before we build that community park. Please follow along with us as we move steadily toward that goal.
