Supporting Women Veterans Facing Homelessness

by AURA HOME WOMEN VETS

Operating support for Aura Women Vets. Homeless women Veterans are confronted with issues like:

• Converting military job skills to be competitive in the employment market
• Budget personal finances from change in pay and financial responsibilities
• Developing new habits and connections to reintegrate into civilian life
• Living without the structure and discipline provided by the military
• Feeling like an outcast amongst people without military life or combat experience
• Medical concerns like Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), loss of body parts; Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Heart Disease, and cancers caused by their military service
• Mental Health concerns like depression, Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) caused by MST or combat, and suicidal thoughts
• Misinformation and bias when attempting to access resources available to veterans

AHWV understands what these women are going through because the founder is a 19-year Army Veteran who was homeless herself for almost ten years while struggling with health concerns and PTSD, including Military Sexual Trauma (MST). Working independently with each woman Veteran, programs provided by Aura Home are designed to help women facing or in fear of homelessness become self-sufficient. Programs include:

• Temporary Financial Assistance- mortgage/rent, utilities, deposits
• Personal Case Management and Mentorship
• VA Benefit Navigation and Community Resource Access
• VA Chaperone- Medical, Claims and Appeals
• Transportation- car payment, car repair, car insurance, and bus pass
• Housing and Employment Search- through employment agencies and web searches
• Peace Education Program- Personal Discovery Program
• Temporary Housing- Felicia Reeves Home projected to open 2025
• Education on community resources, budgeting, self-sufficiency
