Freedom Dogs is a non-profit organization based in Oceanside, California, that provides service dogs to veterans and active-duty military members suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The organization’s mission is to improve the lives of these individuals by pairing them with highly trained service dogs. We are proud to be the only accredited service dog organization working with active-duty service members at the Wounded Warrior Battalion West at Camp Pendleton, CA as well as with Veterans.
The dogs provided by Freedom Dogs are trained not only to assist with physical tasks but also to exhibit behaviors that help mitigate anxiety, supporting their handlers in coping with the challenges associated with PTSD and other mental health issues. The companionship and support offered by these service dogs can significantly enhance the quality of life for the veterans they serve.
The Freedom Dogs Puppy Raiser and Partner Program involves several phases, with training held at our dedicated facility in Oceanside. It begins with a meeting between the warrior, dog, and trainer, then progresses to weekly classroom sessions where the warrior actively participates in the dog’s training. This involvement builds trust, purpose, and connection while helping reduce anxiety and depression. As confidence grows, the warrior gradually ventures into daily life—attending medical appointments, shopping, or community events—with the support of the dog and trainer. Over time, this training fosters independence and resilience, with the impact extending well beyond the individual to strengthen families and ease strain on the broader community.
Nearly 20 veterans and active-duty service members die by suicide every day, highlighting the urgent need for effective interventions that address invisible wounds like PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. Freedom Dogs offers a proven solution by pairing warriors with skilled trainers and specially trained service dogs. This approach fosters healing, reduces anxiety and depression, and restores a sense of purpose and independence.
The success of these programs is measured by the positive impact on participants' lives and their continued progress toward recovery. Freedom Dogs is committed to providing lifelong support, and our volunteer trainers are available 24/7. Freedom Dogs offers not just service dogs, but also a supportive family.
The need for Freedom Dogs has never been greater. Each new puppy raised represents not just a future service dog, but a lifeline for a warrior learning to navigate life after trauma. As demand rises, we anticipate the need for additional puppy raisers, trainers, and donor partners each year. Outcomes are carefully measured through trainer reports, warrior feedback, and progress evaluations, ensuring every investment produces tangible results.
The total cost of raising and training one Freedom Dog is $50,000. This includes the dog's journey from puppyhood through training, active service, and retirement. Funding is also used for veterinary care, medications, food, equipment, training, and handler support. Securing full funding is essential to sustaining and continuing the growth of our program, now and in the future. We rely on the generosity of our community stakeholders to provide the necessary program services.
By supporting our organization, partners join Freedom Dogs in addressing the urgent and critical needs that drive our mission every day.
