Pittsburgh Modern Committee

by PRESERVATION PITTSBURGH

The Modern Committee works to raise public awareness of modern architectural sites in Pittsburgh. The Modern Committee offered a downtown modern architecture and art walking tour as part of Doors Open Pittsburgh in 2019. In 2018, 2017, and 2020, we featured Oakland modern architecture through a walking tour. Additionally, the committee assisted with the launch of the book Imagining the Modern: Architecture, Urbanism and the Pittsburgh Renaissance, with Preservation Pittsburgh serving as the fiscal sponsor for donations and helping with publicity. The book follows the critical 2015-16 exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art’s Heinz Architectural Center. Preservation Pittsburgh organized the June 2019 book release reception at the former Westinghouse building. The Modern Committee continues to focus on education and research surrounding structures from the recent past, including an extensive look at the unique former Mellon Bank branches. Recent walking tours and gatherings include the October 2021 Portal Bridge Picnic in Point State Park and upcoming walking tour of modern landscapes as part of the Society for Architectural Historians conference on April 28, 2022.
