Based on a need in our community St. Peter's Church started an afterschool program, "Success for All" which provides free or reduced rate afterschool tutoring, homework assistance, enrichment, opportunities for music and art and a healthy snack. The program runs from 3 pm to 6 pm and children arrive via Morris School District buses and are picked up by their parents. The majority of the children come from homes where Spanish is spoken, and parents do not speak fluently or read and write English. Children are provided individual services that assist their academic success, as well as other opportunities we provide.
St. Peter's also hosts a Healthy Choices Market once a week which provides eggs, milk, meat and fresh produce to about 50-65 families - many from our afterschool program or from the Collinsville Child Care Center which is run independently in a small building on our church campus. They also serve low income families and refer their school age children to our afterschool program.
Each Saturday, St. Peter's hosts the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center breakfast and lunch program. Approximately 100 guests are served each week.
Just started this fall, St. Peter's is hosting a satellite center for the North Porch Infant and Children's Program which provides emergency diapers, formula and supplies. This program is funded by the Diocese of Newark, as well as collections at the church that go to the program and is staffed by St. Peter's volunteers and is a service provided to all women in need. There is some overlap between families involved in our afterschool program and guests at our market.
St. Peter's Outreach Commission has been educated about the needs of the Hispanic population and low income families and has become involved in reaching out to those in need. We use volunteers from within our church and also others with an interest in serving the community.
Again, these programs are not religiously affiliated, no membership or attendance at St. Peter's is a pre-requisite for participating in these programs.
