The Organization
Founded in 2018, Societies of Unity is a nonprofit organization on a mission to empower African youth to harness the power of art and digital storytelling to drive social change in their communities. We provide spaces for them to explore creative outlets, while also gaining skills in digital technology and social entrepreneurship.
Project Overview
Artistic learning spaces are limited in Liberia and often non-existent in underserved communities. In 2021, Societies of Unity opened its first art space, Creative World, in Clara Town, a popular slum community located on Bushrod Island in Monrovia Liberia. The space provides a safe and inclusive environment for the youth to participate in our educational programs which center on video production, computer literacy, graphic design, music production, and education leadership.
To date, this space has served 300 students and evolved into a hub for learning and community transformation. With 85% of schools in Liberia lacking creative-based educational programs, especially for students from lower-income backgrounds, these programs are often overlooked or considered supplementary. Our Creative World Digital Art space bridges this gap by offering programs that recognize that art and creativity is an essential component of education. The increasing enrollment in our programs and the tangible positive impact witnessed in our students' lives serve as compelling evidence of our project's success.
Project Goal
To acquire more funding to maintain this space to continue carrying out these programs.
This project has primarily been funded through individual donations, and in 2023 received funding from Microsoft. As we seek more institutional funding for this project, we are seeking collaboration with a fiscal sponsor.
