Phoenix House was established in 1967 in New York City when six addicts came together to support each other in their fight against addiction. For over 50 years, we have helped individuals rediscover their strength through effective substance use disorder treatment. We are committed to treating the whole person – and their families – with caring, qualified professionals in the fields of psychiatry, medicine, mental health, social work, education, and recovery support. We are passionate about healing individuals, families, and communities challenged by substance use disorders and related mental health disorders.
In addition to treatment to help people overcome substance use disorders, our services include treatment for substance users with mental health problems; outpatient and residential treatment for military personnel, veterans, and their families; and medication-assisted treatment. Over the years, Phoenix House has helped thousands of people overcome addiction in order to lead healthy, productive, and rewarding lives. Phoenix House’s efforts are largely focused on undeserved communities, individuals who often lack resources and access to health insurance.
In the last several years, Phoenix House has undergone changes to its service delivery model. Changes at the government level in the provision of care increase patient access to psychiatrists, nurses and medical assisted treatment, greatly benefiting patients and increasing care, but also increasing the cost of care. Our average patient is unemployed when they come to us and underinsured, if they have any insurance at all. The reality is that government resources do not cover the true cost of care.
Our ability to be a "one-stop shop" that provides residential, outpatient, medical and psychiatric care means we are the best and most accessible option in New York & Long Island. We are committed to preserving our history and continuing to grow and enrich our services to best serve patients. On April 1, 2019, Phoenix Houses of NY & LI was launched with new President & CEO Ann-Marie Foster at the helm. It was at this time that each region across the country became its own independent entity, as a strategic decision was made that this direction would help ensure the strength and viability of each region. Additionally, Phoenix House NY & LI transitioned our Long Island City and Lake Ronkonkoma locations to a new treatment model designed by New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services that offers medical, psychiatric and support services all under residential treatment. Only a handful of programs have undertaken this transition and early indications support its many benefits to our patients, however reimbursement can be problematic.
We are committed maintaining a high quality level of care throughout the NY Metro Area and are honored to serve our community for as long as we are needed.
