The Boston Rescue Mission is a community-based organization that provides programs and services that focus on preventing and ending homelessness. Our 39 Kingston Street location in the heart of downtown Boston serves needy women and men in many neighborhoods, including Dorchester, Roxbury, South Boston, and many others. While we separate women’s and men’s programs for therapeutic reasons, the Boston Rescue Mission does not discriminate or deny services to individuals based on race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religious creed, status as a disabled or Vietnam Era veteran, national origin, color, pregnancy, marital status, physical or mental handicap.
The Boston Rescue Mission’s extensive experience serving the urban poor has evolved into a comprehensive continuum of care for guests and residents. Guests who visit the facility struggle with homelessness and addiction, and often suffer from mental health illnesses. They frequently have unresolved legal and family issues and lack the basic skills necessary to remain in the workforce. Many do not even have a valid ID, are without health insurance, and therefore often have medical issues that have not been addressed. The Mission works to provide services according to each program member’s individual needs.
We offer emergency, short-term, and long-term shelter, as well as health clinics, hot meals, housing search assistance and residential programs. The Mission provides free residential care, intensive case management, and individual counseling for job training. In our residential programs, we move beyond emergency shelter and meals and challenge residents to confront the root causes of their homelessness and incarceration. By addressing individuals’ physical, emotional, and spiritual issues, we work to prevent and end the cycle of poverty that leads to recidivism or to a life on the streets.
As an organization, Boston Rescue Mission has a great deal of experience helping homeless individuals achieve self-sufficiency through the following programs:
* Post Detox: A program for men and women with addiction issues who have detoxed, but are vulnerable to relapse.
* Life Growth: A program that assists homeless individuals in their efforts to establish and maintain independent living. Life Growth is designed to provide a supportive 12-step recovery environment to those who are homeless as they transition to independent living.
* Outpatient Substance Abuse Counseling: A program that offers individualized and group substance abuse counseling on an outpatient basis.
* On the Job: A program that provides vocational services to those in need of training and more intensive case management services concerning employment needs. Program participants also pursue employment opportunities and/or continuing education.
* Safe Haven: A program that provides ten units of transitional housing specifically for veterans who have had trouble with housing programs in the past.
* Safe & Healthy: An overnight shelter program providing a first step to leaving street life, and including services such as: hot meals, toiletries, bathroom and shower facilities, and case management.
*School based food pantry brings free groceries to low income inner city schools to ensure families and children are getting proper nutrition in their homes.
*Stay-In-Bed program provides a two week healing and respite space for homeless recovering patients getting out of the hospital who do not need 24 hour care but still receive medical care and attention up to five times a week.
