As it says in our mission statement, whatever is needed. The Island is an interesting place. Approximately 8,000 full time residents increasing to about 25,000 during season. Many of the locals are service workers who make their money during season, farm workers, and fishermen. There are many seniors, some with money, many living on social security.
We operate in many different ways. We have Beacon Bites delivering meals to 20-25 people daily. There is a transportation program where drivers take people to medical appointments and treatments. There is no public transportation on the Island. Two Case Managers help people with government programs, and economic issues. If we help with rent or utilities, the person must take a budget class. On Saturdays we have a Food Bank, and an emergency pantry on the days we are open. There are computers, fax, and printers for people to use. There is a terrific GED program which has graduated many people from high school. ESOL is taught out at work places such as the Tree Farms and the Shrimp Farm. There are Health and Wellness programs, support classes for caregivers, Veterans Support services, and free tax preparation. We put together a group, Pine Island Cares, that is comprised of other non-profits on the Island. We meet 4 times a year with the goal of reaching more people and avoiding duplication. At Christmas the Beacon cooked and delivered 250 meals to families and 80 stockings for the children.
We have a Thrift store called the Attic which supplies the basic funding for these programs. Our biggest fundraiser is Holiday House at Christmas. Then, of course are other fundraisers, grants and donations.
To do all this, we have 2 full time people, a bookkeeper, 9 other part timers, and over 100 volunteers who work regularly. There are other volunteers who help with fundraisers.
The Beacon is proud to be a United Way House and the lead service group on the Island.
